Cloud vs Local Storage: Which Is Actually Safer for Your Data

This gets framed as a competition with one winner, when the honest answer is that cloud and local storage protect against genuinely different risks.

What each one actually protects against

Local storage protects against risks tied to a third party (no dependence on a cloud provider's security, uptime, or business continuing to exist) but is vulnerable to anything happening to your physical location — fire, theft, flood, or simple drive failure with no automatic offsite copy.

Cloud storage protects against exactly those local/physical risks (data survives even if your house burns down) but introduces dependence on the provider's own security practices, account security (a compromised account is a real risk), and requires internet access to retrieve your data when you need it.

Why "which is safer" is the wrong question

The right question is "what am I protecting against, specifically" — a local-only backup strategy is fully exposed to a house fire or theft; a cloud-only strategy is fully exposed to account compromise or provider issues. Neither one alone covers the realistic range of things that actually go wrong.

The actual well-established answer: 3-2-1

The widely-used 3-2-1 backup principle: at least 3 copies of important data, across at least 2 different media types, with at least 1 copy stored offsite. Cloud storage naturally satisfies the offsite requirement; local backups (an external drive, a NAS) satisfy the "different media type" and "not dependent on internet access" requirements. Neither alone follows this principle completely.

A practical minimum setup

  1. Your working copy (on your main device).
  2. A local backup (external drive or NAS) — protects against needing internet access and against certain account-based risks.
  3. A cloud backup — protects against local disasters.

If you only have one of these three, you have a real, specific gap — not a "good enough" strategy, just one that hasn't been tested by the specific failure mode it doesn't cover yet.
