Ghidra vs IDA Pro: Which Should You Learn First?

This comparison used to have an obvious answer (IDA Pro, if you could afford it). Ghidra's release changed that.

The short version

Start with Ghidra. It's free, actively maintained, has a genuinely good decompiler, and covers the large majority of what a learner or general practitioner needs. Consider IDA Pro later if you hit a specific limitation Ghidra doesn't cover for your use case.

Cost

Ghidra is completely free and open-source, released by the NSA in 2019. IDA Pro's licensing has historically run from expensive to very expensive depending on the edition — a real barrier for anyone learning independently rather than through an employer.

Decompiler quality

Both tools include a decompiler that converts raw assembly into C-like pseudocode — this is what makes modern reverse engineering dramatically more approachable than reading pure assembly. IDA's decompiler (Hex-Rays) is mature and well-regarded; Ghidra's has improved substantially since release and is now genuinely competitive for most common architectures (x86, x64, ARM).

Where IDA still has an edge

  • Architecture/processor support breadth — IDA has supported an unusually wide range of processor architectures for a long time, useful for niche embedded or legacy targets.
  • Plugin ecosystem maturity — a longer history means more third-party tooling has accumulated around IDA specifically.
  • Some professional teams standardize on it — for continuity with existing analysis workflows and institutional expertise, independent of a pure feature comparison.

The practical recommendation

Learn Ghidra first — there's no cost barrier, and the skills (reading decompiled pseudocode, navigating a disassembler's interface, cross-referencing functions and strings) transfer directly to IDA if you ever need it. Very few beginners actually hit the specific edge cases where IDA's advantages matter before they've built solid fundamentals in a free tool.

Some professional workflows depend on specific plugins or architecture support that's more mature in IDA's ecosystem, and some teams standardize on it for continuity with existing tooling and expertise. For most individual learning and general analysis, that gap rarely matters.

Can I use both?

Yes, and many practitioners do — some binaries or tasks are simply easier in one tool's decompiler output than the other's, so having both available (Ghidra is free either way) costs nothing but time to learn a second interface.
