How a VPN Actually Affects Your Speed and Security

VPN marketing tends to oversell what it protects against, while genuinely useful protections it does provide get undersold in the noise. Here's the honest, unglamorous version.

What a VPN actually does, technically

A VPN routes your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel to the VPN provider's server, which then forwards it to its actual destination. This hides your traffic's contents and destination from your local network/ISP, and hides your real IP address from the sites you visit — but it doesn't make you invisible or untraceable in every sense.

What it genuinely protects against

  • Your ISP seeing which sites you visit — with a VPN, your ISP sees encrypted traffic to the VPN server, not your actual browsing destinations.
  • Anyone on a shared/public network (public Wi-Fi, for example) intercepting your unencrypted traffic — though most modern websites already use HTTPS encryption independently of a VPN, which covers a lot of this same risk on its own.
  • Websites seeing your real IP address — they see the VPN server's IP instead, which can matter for privacy and for accessing region-restricted content.

What it doesn't protect against

A VPN doesn't stop tracking via cookies, account logins, or browser fingerprinting — if you're logged into an account, that service still knows it's you, VPN or not. It also doesn't protect against malware, phishing, or a compromised device — it only affects the network transport layer, not what happens on the device itself.

Traffic now takes an extra hop (to the VPN server) and undergoes encryption/decryption overhead — the actual speed impact varies significantly based on:
